IntelliTheme Launch And Giveaway
Hello everyone! It’s John here from AdSense Flippers.
Justin and I were discussing the release of IntelliTheme (the WordPress theme we’ve been developing for the last 6 months), and he mentioned that it might be useful if I took some time to do a short write-up about the theme here on AdSense Flippers. I think this post will be particularly useful for those of you who are actively creating websites for income, and also for those of you who are looking to enter this space.
But, I’m getting ahead of myself!
To tell this story properly, we have to go back in time a little bit.
When I came onboard with the AdSense Flippers, they had only recently seen success by building and selling websites monetized with AdSense. And, while it was clear that this was a winning business model, we knew we could improve on their results. Actually, this was in large part why I was hired in the first place – to see if we could squeeze more value and profit out of the AdSense Flippers portfolio (over 2500 websites created and counting!).
Unfortunately, this is a pretty difficult task to accomplish at that kind of scale. Or, for anything more than a couple of sites really. Optimizing and improving conversions for one website is pretty straightforward. Simply make some changes, run some split tests, and keep the winning adjustments. Over time, this can result in dramatic earning increases. Unfortunately, the process of optimizing a website is both extremely time-consuming and labor intensive. In fact, there are hundreds of people who do ONLY this for a living. Entire companies and teams are even built around this principle.
So, we had a tricky situation on our hands. How were we to systematically improve and optimize our websites without spending unrealistic amounts of time and money on each individual domain? (Some of which only earn a few dollars per month. And thus, wouldn’t be worth a great deal of personal attention.) We looked around for a done-for-you service. They exist, but they’re awfully expensive and would eat up any additional profits!
At first, we simply tried different themes that were popular within our industry. WordPress themes like Prosense and CTR Theme quickly became the top performers, so we rolled with those for quite a while. However, we ended having to do a lot of theme hacking to get them to serve our purposes. So, whenever one of our agents would setup a new site, they would need a laundry-list of text documents full of custom CSS, HTML and PHP code to copy into the themes before the site was ready to roll. This was a huge pain point, and a major limitation, as it rendered many of our sites and themes unable to be updated (we’d lose the custom code).
We needed a better, more streamlined solution.
So, we started brainstorming both on how we could build a more useful platform, and how we could get more granular with our optimization techniques. Ultimately, we had to figure out how could we test a wide variety of designs and ad placements on ALL of our websites. And then also ensure that each of our websites was performing at its best. We quickly realized that some kind of software would have to provide the answer.
Since all of our websites were already built with WordPress, a custom theme became the obvious solution. Still, none of us had encountered a WordPress theme that would track AdSense clicks automatically…we weren’t even sure it could be done. But, we knew that even a small increase in CTR across all of our sites had the potential to yield huge returns. So, we had to find a way. And that’s how IntelliThemewas born.
Split-testing is Time Consuming
The first problem we had to tackle was to figure out how to automate the split testing of different design options and ad locations. We didn’t want to have to hire someone to login to all of our sites, change themes, setup conversion tracking, etc… That would be a full-time job even if we only had a 100 websites! So, the theme had to do that on its own. We had to be able to set it and forget it. And, that’s exactly what IntelliTheme does. IntelliTheme comes pre-packaged with five different layouts, which we call ‘Presets’.
Why five? I’m glad you asked. Gathering the quantity of data necessary for statistically valid split testing is exhausting and takes a ton of time. Change one design element, headline, font, color, etc… and you need hundreds of impressions to get any sort of valid or actionable information. Thus we realized early on that too many Presets would actually make the theme less useful, as layout testing would simply require too much time (literally, months and months).
The five Presets we’ve included with IntelliTheme are already based on the BEST design elements from themes we’ve already tested on thousands of sites. So, we knew this would be an excellent starting point. But, we still like to give our sites a bit of a custom feel. So, we created the ability to change colors, adjust fonts, alter text sizes and even to upload header images.
So once the theme is installed, all you have to do is activate any or all of these five different Presets, and they will begin to rotate in for different visitors to your site – Automatically running the split-test for you. Once you get things setup, you can walk away and wait for the data to roll in. Pretty cool, eh?
So Where is All My Data?
Secondly, we didn’t want to have to link each site up to a bunch of different testing tools, conversion trackers, and web traffic analyzers. Primarily, we wanted to avoid this because its a pain. But, a larger technical problem was that there wasn’t a way for these external tools to know what layouts were showing when.. The solution to this issue was building the data tracking right into the theme. That’s right, IntelliTheme will track your pageviews, ad clicks and CTR for you – right within the WordPress Admin.
No more setting up accounts and passwords all over the web, linking them, pasting random bits of code all over your sites, etc… Now all you have to do is turn on IntelliTheme, let it run for a few days or weeks, then log back in and check the Statistics Dashboard for the results. Data is recorded in real-time. So, you can update the stats at any point and see, down to the minute, what your conversions are looking like. (I’d also like to mention at this point that the theme works with almost any type of advertising medium, any html code in the form of an ad can be used on a site with Intellitheme, and clicks on that ad can be tracked.) You don’t even have to leave your WordPress Admin!
We’ve found this to be an extremely useful and handy feature. It makes improving our sites SO simple. We can just send an agent once every month or so to check the collected statistics. If one particular Preset is performing best, then they can turn the other ones off. It only takes – literally, seconds. I know that this probably sounds pretty cool now, but while we were building the tool, we were definitely worried that, ultimately, there would be ONE specific Preset that always outperformed the others. (Eliminating the need for split-testing and making IntelliTheme, more or less – useless.) However, even our early testing showed some presets perform better on particular niches than others.
Some of the presets are indeed quite different looking than others. Not to mention you’re able to customize each of them quite easily. And, we have consistently found that different layouts work better for different websites and industries. It’s very difficult to predict which preset is going to perform best on any given site, as it varies widely by niche and industry. For our niche sites, we’re pretty happy when we see an overall bump in CTR as a result of the theme. And, for authority site builders, this is a great starting tool to help you narrow down what types of layouts and theme choices could be used to craft a custom theme that is both beautiful and profitable.
Security Concerns When Optimizing
Finally, the last problem we built IntelliTheme to solve, is one of security and simplicity. Before IntelliTheme, having our employees testing out AdSense click conversions meant giving them access to tools like Google Analytics, our AdSense Dashboard, and even FTP access to our servers. Not good!
With Intellitheme, all of this is now inside of the WordPress admin, and, it’s extraordinarily simple. A five minute video can basically teach our agents how to set it up, how to use it, how to analyze the results, and how to pick the winners. It’s pretty much dummy-proof.
The Future of IntelliTheme
We’ve made a big investment of time and energy in IntelliTheme, and, while that’s already paying off, we’re also excited about the future of the platform. IntelliTheme is our baby and we’ve rolled it out to all of our sites and will continue to add to it for future sites. Here are a few things we’re looking to release in upcoming versions
Create your own custom presetsand layouts with drag and drop capability. Use your own creativity to test your designs against the packaged ones, you choose the winners and then test them against each other.
In the next go around, we would like the theme to go ahead and turn off the layouts that simply aren’t performing well, without you having to even log in and check on your site. Once a statistically significant amount of pageviews have occurred, the theme will automatically make a choice as to whether or not it should continue using that layout. (We believe this will be a game-changer…a totally hands-off solution that just prints us more money!)
Secondly, we’re going to use the data we will be collecting by having IntelliTheme installed on thousands of websites, to create even more useful and amazing Presets. We’d also like to include some responsive and even mobile designs. How’s That Sound?
If you made it this far in the post, my guess is that this is the type of tool that is likely right up your alley.
