We’re hiring content marketing specialist!

We’ve been growing our team aggressively in the last couple of months, and now it is time to expand our marketing department again. This time, we’re looking for someone who truly understands content marketing, copywriting, and blog creation — especially in the online business brokering space.

You will be helping us expand into new markets and strengthen our reputation as thought leaders in buying and selling online businesses. You’ll be starting out with us in Boracay, Philippines in April, then joining us in Saigon, Vietnam, to finish up your training.

This is an exciting position where you will be able to grow from a job into a full-fledged career with us. I was originally hired for a similar position back in 2016, and it led me to quit the oil field and become a full-time writer (read my story here).

This Content Marketing Specialist position is an opportunity I wish I’d had years ago, but now that opportunity is here for you.

What’s Our Story?

Justin and Joe moved to the Philippines way back in 2009 to start an outsourcing company. After they built a team, they realized they didn’t have enough client hours to fill up their team’s time throughout the week, so they started creating little niche sites.

These niche sites were eventually sold to website buyers, and we documented the entire journey on our blog. Because we had so many eyeballs looking at our listings, this led to us gaining a big audience that started asking us if we would sell THEIR sites for them.

We thought… hmmm, there is a business in this somewhere.

Fast forward to 2013; we rebranded away from our old Adsense Flippers name and became Empire Flippers, a full-serviced business merger and acquisition brokerage that has since been listed on the INC 5000 two years in a row, beneath the 200 mark, as one of the fastest growing companies in the U.S.

Now, we sell every online business you can imagine (check out our popular business models series here).

We’ve become thought leaders in the space through our podcasts, blogs, and Youtube videos, but we’re still looking to grow that reputation even further.

In 2017, our company grew significantly, with Q2 accounting for 27 percent of all-time sales in our company’s history. We’ve sold deals in the $20k range all the way up to a $1.6 million site we sold in just over a week.

The thing is… we’re not even close to being done growing.

We’re just getting started.

That’s why we need you.

What’s the Opportunity?

The Content Marketing Specialist role will be a full-time position where you’ll begin by joining us in the Philippines in April. For the rest of your training, you’ll be in Saigon, Vietnam — the land of motorbike ninjas and amazing pho.

Initially, you will have a six-month probation period with us while you are learning the ropes. After that, it is very likely that this position will become location independent, allowing you to live anywhere you want in the world (that has a decent internet connection at least).

You will be able to cut your teeth in the content marketing game, level up your skills, and help grow our business even further.

After the six-month period, you will be our full-time content marketer and will be leading projects that help move the needle on growing our business. This will take some work, of course, as you’ll need to learn to speak and write in our voice and become a representation of our values through the content you create.

You have until Feb. 15 to apply for the position (read below on how to apply).

While the pay isn’t great to start off, at just $2,000 per month, it is more than enough to have a good lifestyle in southeast Asia. You won’t be alone either when you move out here;  some of our team members will be on hand to help you adjust accordingly both in Boracay and in Saigon.

Saigon is a wonderful city full of networking opportunities with other expats and digital entrepreneurs. Think of it as a city where at any given moment you can have a beer and be talking high-level ecommerce or SAAS strategies with a new friend you just met, similar to a conference without the speeches.

Between our internal mentorship and being surrounded by expert digital entrepreneurs, when you join us you will be given a fast track access to learning and mastering digital marketing.

Why Are We Hiring?

We want to create REAL change in this world by changing people’s lives when they buy or sell a business. We’ve helped people adopt children, helped people quit their 9-to-5 grinds and travel the world, and we’ve even helped a few people become millionaires through our brokerage.

That is powerful stuff, and it is something we want to do more.

In order to reach those goals and level up our business, we need you. Someone who is passionate, creative, intelligent, and has the drive to learn the skills needed to push us forward.

Our team is made up of location independent professionals, just like what you will become once you join our team. Here is what a couple of our team members have to say about working with Empire Flippers.

Gregory Elfrink

“Working at Empire Flippers changed my life. I went from working on oil rigs in Alaska to becoming a content marketing pro as their content manager. I’ve traveled across the world now for this job, attending high-level conferences, meeting inspiring entrepreneurs, and learning more about the online business world than any college could ever hope to teach you. The culture is great. Everyone here is supportive. There is an old saying in leadership that a great leader will allow you to fail but not allow you to be a failure. I believe that sums up the type of mentorship you’ll get from us here at Empire Flippers. “

John Gaska

“It still continues to amaze me how much information that I learn and just absorb from working for Empire Flippers. Being involved with a team of passionate people has kept me inspired, and I’m more motivated than ever. I’ve sharpened the skills I came in with and picked up quite a few new ones along the way. Good advice and support from anyone at the company has always been a quick message away, allowing me to feel confident when tackling new, challenging projects and tasks.”

What’s the Job Like?

Look, this isn’t your typical job. You are not going to be working 9-to-5 in some life-draining cubicle doing TPS reports.

You’re going to be working on some cool projects. At first, you’ll be doing low-level tasks, but as you get the hang of it and grow your skill set even further, we will be looking to add more to your plate. You’ll work closely with our content manager as you help us expand our business.

Don’t get me wrong; some days you will be working hard, with a 12-hour day here or there… but that being said, there are definitely days where working by the pool, slowly sipping on a margarita, is totally fine with us.

You’ll be doing new and different things every day to meet our business needs. Some of those things will be:

  • Writing thoughtful, in-depth blog posts on a weekly to biweekly basis
  • Planning out our editorial calendar
  • Creating a content vault (i.e., logging all of our content into a spreadsheet for future use)
  • Using your SEO knowledge to help us get better rankings, using tools like AHREFs and SEMRush to get us better positioning
  • Reaching out to other companies for content collaborations
  • Going to conferences to build up our brand in new markets
  • Helping to manage our seller interviews and various content reports
  • Using copywriting skills to enhance our listing descriptions to get more eyes on the businesses we’re selling
  • Looking for ways to improve our email marketing and conversions in general
  • Helping to manage and create content for the weekly webinars we’ll be doing soon (starting in mid Q1)
  • And much, much more…

Does anything on this list excite you? Can you see yourself pumping out high levels of value-driven content in the buying and selling business space?

If so, then you should apply. We’re looking for you.

What Skills Do You Need?

The first and foremost skill you need is to be a good team player and be personable. You need to know how to deal with people, how to solve problems calmly, and just be an all-around good person who always chooses to do the right thing (even if it sometimes isn’t the best thing for business, like when we discussed a business flop a customer had with us on a podcast or when we got scammed by Russian hackers).

We believe in hiring for a cultural fit more than someone who is just skilled. Skills can be learned, after all.

That being said, we do want to see some knowledge from you.

A content marketer’s role is to know SEO, know how content marketing works, and be skilled in copywriting.

You’ll need to be creative and be able to analyze data to provide our readers with real insights. An example of a creative data-driven post can be read here.

We will also want you to come up with content ideas that help people move further down our sales funnel. For example, we wrote the post How to Win the Wire Race to do this. This post has no SEO value, but it is a great piece of content when leads opt in to our newsletter. We share that they can leave money on file with us for future purchases without having to worry about being beaten out by another wire.

This is an example of middle of funnel content that helps people get closer to the bottom and ultimately decide on buying or selling a business with us.

In addition to writing content, a big part of your job is going to be outreach and finding collaborative opportunities, whether those are:

  • Guest posts
  • Joint webinars
  • Getting us inside paid courses with a module on buying/selling businesses
  • Being a guest on a podcast (or bringing a cool guest onto our podcasts)
  • Spotting business development opportunities
  • Representing our brand at conferences, to the point of getting up and giving a small speech to the crowd

We pride ourselves on our “Be Everywhere” content strategy. The more diverse places we can be and the more mediums we can use, the better we can dominate the marketplace as the leading brokerage.

We’re already the biggest team in the industry, and our growth trajectory is just getting started.

What’s the Lifestyle Like?

You will be living out in southeast Asia for the first few months, specifically the Philippines for April and then Saigon, Vietnam. During these first six months, we will be training you and helping you gain the skills you’ll need to do your job effectively.

But it’s not all hard work.

We also love to have a good time. You will be living near me (Greg), and our CMO Justin Cooke will also be around for both our time in Boracay and in Saigon. We’ll show you around the city on day one so you can catch your bearings. While you’ll buy your own ticket to the Philippines, we’ll be covering your rent for the month of April and will supplement your first few months in Saigon.

There are plenty of great places to live that are affordable, whether you want to do a month-to-month contract or sign a six-month lease. We can steer you in the right direction, too.

Though it’s not an everyday occurrence, some days you will be working some weird hours since we have clients from all over the world. This might mean an early morning, taking the afternoon off, and doing some work late in the evening.

We often host monthly meetups, known as Juntos, in conjunction with the local Dynamite Circle in whatever city we happen to be at in the world. These Juntos are informal gatherings of online entrepreneurs, and while there is business talk, there is also just a lot of fun that we end up getting into.

Every few months, our whole company meets up somewhere in the world to hang out as well. We’ve gone on team paragliding trips, snorkeling boat rides, and even had one crazy party in Hong Kong together not too long ago.

You’ll have the freedom of both exploring the world and learning invaluable skills in the process.

Love It… What’s the Catch?

This isn’t a charity.

You’ll be working hard for us. If you plan on using this as an opportunity to have a gap year or just travel the world for a bit… we’re not interested in you.

We’re looking for someone who is here for the long term. We want someone who sees our vision, where we are going, and is excited to go the distance with us. At the end of the day, you need to be a thriving professional at your craft.

For the first six months, you’ll be working with myself and Justin to make sure you learn the required skills.

You’ll need to buy your ticket to come work with us in Boracay, Philippines. You will arrive in the Philippines no later than April 6, ready to work, and after two weeks, you’ll travel to Saigon, Vietnam to continue your training. You also won’t be getting paid a lot at first, making $2,000 per month for those first six months. After that, you will be introduced to our generous compensation plan and will likely make somewhere around $35-55k per year.

If you are ready to go the distance and put in the hard work, we’re ready to lock arms and make sure you get there with us.

Anything Else?

As mentioned earlier, you’ll start off with lower-level tasks that will build you up into a world class content marketer over time.

Those first six months will be our trial period to make sure we’re a good fit for each other. Without trying to oversell the job position as a hype man, this is one of the most solid opportunities in the entire industry if you want to learn how to play big in the online business space (and I’m speaking from personal experience here).

We will review every application that gets sent in.

Even if you do not get the job, we have connections throughout the entire industry, and many of our peers are looking for skilled content marketers. If we think you have the skills but got beat out by another applicant, we’ll forward your application to any of our friends that are hiring for a similar position.

How Do I Apply?

Here is the sequence of events we use when hiring for our new content marketing specialist role:

  • You record a YouTube video* explaining who you are and why you’re a good fit for the position, fill out an application by clicking the link below, and submit it by Feb. 15
  • We review submissions and schedule first interviews
  • Once second interviews are done, a final decision is made
  • The chosen specialist will be announced in late February 2018
  • The chosen specialist will arrive in the Philippines in beautiful Boracay on April 6th

*YouTube Video Requirements:

We will only accept submissions that include a YouTube URL. Please leave the video “unlisted” in preferences and share the link with us. The quality of the video doesn’t matter, and there are no bonus points for editing. We just want (up to) three minutes of you explaining and answering the following questions (based on your previous experience):

  • Why is the content marketing specialist position an excellent fit for you and for us?
  • Why do you think you’re a good fit to take our content marketing game to the next level?

If you’re thinking about applying but are worried you might not have enough (insert excuse here) — don’t worry. If you want to build something more than just a 9-to-5 job, then click the “apply” button below.

We look forward to working with you soon!

Will you be hiring new apprentices soon?

  2. Philip Hortense says:

Uh, this job sounds great, except you have to live in Vietnam:

    https://www.nomadicmatt.com/travel-blogs/why-ill-never-return-to-vietnam/

It’s also a communist state. I know a lot of hipster expats say it’s only “slightly communist,” meaning that it doesn’t seem oppressive… and that may be true, but only until it isn’t. All it would take is a couple of days of political discontent for a crackdown to occur… and good luck if you get arrested, you may never be heard from again.

    • Greg Elfrink says:

      Hey Philip,

I’ve been living in Vietnam for over a year now and basically none of what Matt talks about in that article has ever happened to me. Saigon itself is a city that is well and alive with awesome stuff happening all the time. A community of digital nomads almost as big as in Chiang Mai too.

By the way, job is remote after 6 months as long as you pass through our probationary period. Live anywhere you like as long as you have good wifi :-)
