We're Hiring a Sales Apprentice!

We’re looking for a Sales Apprentice to join our fast growing company. You’ll be joining us in October/November out in southeast Asia. After 6 months, if it’s a good fit for everyone, we’d like to bring you onto our management team.
We’ve spent the last couple of years rapidly expanding our company. Going from $200K in sales in 2012 to $4.5M+ in 2015 — enough growth to land us at #161 on the INC 5000 list.
We recently added two new people to our marketing team, and that’s helped us to significantly ramp up our exposure to new potential customers. Now, we’re looking for (at least) two Sales Apprentices to help us convert all these new potential buyers/sellers into customers.
This is the type of position we wished we’d had years ago. You’ll be working hard, learning new skill sets, being mentored by people who care about your professional development, all while living/working/traveling around South East (SE) Asia.
So, you might be wondering…
What’s the Opportunity?
We’re hiring Sales Apprentices to help us expand our onboarding process for new customers.
Initially, you’ll be learning more about the business, our process, and the types of customers we typically work with.
Ultimately, you’ll be helping potential customers better understand our buying/selling process. You’ll be answering questions and speaking to customers over the phone, via chat, and over email about our deposit process, the types of sites we list, and our marketplace.
Expect some travel, as we run a distributed team and don’t have a typical office you’ll be working from. You’ll be starting with us in Chiang Mai, Thailand in November and then moving to Manila, Philippines to work closely with our CEO, Joe Magnotti.
While this is a 6-month apprenticeship, the goal will be to move you into a more permanent role, where you’ll be part of the team for the next 2-5+ years and beyond.
What’s Our Story?
We originally moved to the Philippines in 2009 to set up an outsourcing company. A year later, we created our first online business, AdSense Flippers. In the years following, we dabbled in website theme creation, DIY niche site services like keyword research, and even wrote some books on how to get started in building profitable websites.
In early 2013, we decided to merge all of our brands into one — Empire Flippers.
We were still offering products and services, so in 2014 we decided to sell off (or give away) any businesses or side projects that weren’t directly involved in helping others buy, sell, or invest in online businesses. Risky business move!
That gamble paid off — we’ve since become the market leading brand in the online brokerage industry.
We brokered more than $4.5M in transactions in 2015 and are on track to break $8M in 2016.
We’re really happy with where we’re at, but know that in our rapidly growing industry, there’s more work to do in 2017 and beyond.

What’s The Position Like?
While we ARE an INC 500 company, we’re not a Fortune 500 company, which means you won’t be just another employee in a cubicle. You’ll be working with our entire team on tasks and projects that really move the needle.
From helping sellers determine exit strategies to discussing finance opportunities for buyers, you’ll become an integral part of our intake and sales process for new clients.
One of the challenges will be the time zones in Asia. With many clients in the US, many of your calls will be scheduled early in the morning and late at night. This will typically leave you with project work (and downtime) in the afternoons.
Here are examples of tasks you might be working on, day to day:
- Taking a call with a potential seller wanting to know more about listing and selling their business with us, start to finish.
- Taking a call with a depositor that had some questions about the next steps towards purchasing a business they’re interested in.
- Emailing back a potential buyer who had reservations about our deposit process.
- Scheduling a buyer/seller call, moderated by our CEO and the other parties.
- Getting in contact with previous buyers when businesses are listed that meet their criteria and they might find interesting.
Because we’re a smaller team, you should expect to wear different hats at times as the company continues to grow. You’re a sales apprentice, but you might find yourself working on spreadsheets or taking customer service calls from time to time.
What Skills Do I Need?
You love to negotiate and think through deals. We want people that understand the dynamics of working with people, someone that is knowledgeable (or willing to become knowledgeable) about how to effectively sell and how to work with people. We believe in helping both our buyers and our sellers find win-win deals with every business bought or sold.
You are good at spotting both risks and opportunities. Everyday you are going to hear conversations about scaling, business growth, and liabilities. You need to have a good eye for where a business could up its game, and you also need to be able to spot risks that buyers need to know about before purchasing a business. When you have this skill, you will be a much more effective negotiator when on the phone talking directly to our sellers and buyers.
You’re creative and can bring in new buyers and sellers. We have a ton of processes in place, and our marketing machine is growing all the time, giving us more and more leads coming through our funnels. That being said, you should also bring your own unique set of skills to generate potential new buyers and sellers. Who knows? Maybe your unique set of skills is something we start making part of our standard procedures!
You have no problem reaching out to people (especially over the phone). Our business has a lot of moving parts, and one of those moving parts is effective communication. You will be doing orientation calls, familiarizing sellers with our process, and helping them promote their business listings to potential buyers. Ultimately, this is a sales position, so you need to be comfortable with getting on the phone and answering questions as they come at you.
You’re excited to expand the Empire Flippers community and brand. You are going be part of our team, and interacting with our clients. We want someone who can strengthen the bonds we already have with our clients and our general audience. You’re someone who is relatable and who people like — someone people would sit down with and have a beer.
What’s the Lifestyle Like?
You’ll be joining us in Chiang Mai, Thailand for our Empire Flippers Management Retreat, where you will meet Joe and I, and the rest of our management team.
Your main priority will be to learn more about our overall business, structure, and culture. After the meet up is over, you will fly to Manila, Philippines to hang out with Joe “Hot Money” Magnotti, who will help you dig into the sales process.
Our goal will be to get you up to speed right after you arrive. We’ll show you the sites, best places to grab a coffee, knock out some work, etc.
In fact, if you can get here early enough, plan to join us for our next Empire Retreat, which is planned to be in Phuket, Thailand from Oct 28 to Nov 1st. We held this event last August, and had an absolute blast.
Your pay isn’t much to start — $2,000 per month base — while you’re in the apprenticeship program. That’s plenty to live on in SE Asia, while we get you up to speed on the company and your responsibilities, etc. We’ll also be paying for any required travel in and around SE Asia during your apprenticeship.
At the end of 6 months, you’ll be gradually introduced to our generous profit share program. This is a goal-based program shared by our entire team. Assuming we continue to hit our goals in 2017, this could land you anywhere between $40K – $70K+ per year, enough to live a high-quality lifestyle anywhere in SE Asia (and much of the rest of the world).
Love It? What’s the Catch?
Look, this isn’t a charity. We’re a business. You are going to be working your ass off for us these first few months and after, if you make it through our apprenticeship program. It’s not all fruity drinks by the beach — though there are plenty of days like that, trust us.
You are going have to dedicate yourself to Empire Flippers full time. There is a lot of catching up you will have to do. Your time is going to be spent learning not only the ins and outs of how our brokerage works, but also vital sales skills that will help you perform onboarding duties with buyers and sellers that will close deals.
While you’re working for us, you will thrive professionally and you will be surrounded by fellow hustlers, some of whom are on our team and some who are entrepreneurs connected to our business.
This isn’t a side gig or a gap year experience. This is potentially a very lucrative and rewarding career path. We’re looking to create a permanent full time position, one that adds value to our team and to our clients. If you succeed during our apprenticeship program, we want that position to be yours, and hope you will work with us for years to come.
In your first year, you’ll be where Joe and I hangout.
We want you near us because we know you will be able to learn the business and pick up skills at a far quicker rate by being in-person. After the first year, there might be an opportunity for this to become a location independent position.
While there are great lifestyle advantages to living overseas, it also means that you’ll be in a timezone that isn’t great for calls with customers in the US and Europe. You also need to know there will be some late nights, and some pretty early mornings, and that they are very important. You can’t just “phone these calls in.” Remember, your job is to reach out to interested potential clients and get them onboard with our process.
We already mentioned that you will be hustling. Though it is not an everyday circumstance, be aware that there will be days when you put in 14-hours of work. There’s just no getting around it. There will also be days where all you do during the afternoon is hangout by the pool or some other scenic location around Asia.
You’ll start off working on some lower level tasks until you learn more about the business. This may include responding to initial inquiries, taking calls from potential buyers/sellers we’ve never done business with before, etc. It may seem tedious, but you need to know this stuff before you dig into the harder stuff.
Eventually, you’ll be working and building relationships with some of our more established clients.
But your first 6 months will be the proving ground to get you there.
Without overselling it or trying to sound too hypey: this is a pretty awesome opportunity — again, one we wished we had when we first started out.

How Do I Apply?
Here is the sequence of events we use when hiring our new sales professional.
- You record a Youtube video, fill out an application, submit it ASAP
- We review submissions and schedule interviews
- Second interviews are done, along with a final decision
- The apprentice that is chosen will be announced in early October
- The chosen apprentice will arrive in Chiang Mai, Thailand on October 19th for the start of our quarterly meetup and then will also come to our event in Phuket.
The absolute last date to submit your application will be October 3rd.
